5 heart breaking, heart fluttering, hopeful, and loving stars

You guys. YOU GUYS. I loved this.
I’m talking about a serious book hangover here, my friends.
SERIOUS.

This book broke my heart, then gave it hope, then broke it some more, but then finally….FINALLY made me whole. I loved this journey. This story touched my soul.

The characters were real, the characters had lives that none of us would think we’d ever want. Creek View was a small town in California that didn’t have much, and seemed like a dead end life for anyone who never left. I could feel the heat, all the dust in the the air. I could picture the Paradise Motel and I adored it. While I’m pretty sure I’d never want to stay there I kind of ended up falling in love with it. The themed rooms, the owner, the pool. I felt like I was right there.

But enough about the setting, let’s talk about Josh Mitchell. Josh is the book boyfriend I dream about. Brooding. Sexy. Confident. Protective. Broken. Sad. But most importantly, he hadn’t given up. He was awfully close, but he never gave up. And that is all because of Skylar. le sigh.

I have 2 favorite passages in this book. The very favorite I can’t share because I want you to experience it for yourself, but let’s just say there was kissing. The 2nd passage was when Josh was looking out for Skylar. I laughed (out loud!), but at the same time my whole body stiffened and I was like, “Josh, you sexy arrogant piece of intimidating man, you.” In the review on my blog I quote it, but here I'm not sure I can because there's some bad language. Just trust me that there are awesome quotable moments in this story.

Skylar is pretty amazing for someone who just finished high school. She has suffered loss, but instead of moving on and looking forward to a life full of promise, her situation drags her down and nearly drowns her. But most importantly, she keeps going and believes the best in everyone. Josh makes a bright spot in an otherwise depressing summer. I loved her drive, her heart, her passion for art, and her honesty.

The romance is amazing. Basically I was clutching my kindle against my heart as it broke, as it fluttered, as it swelled. There were so many times I thought Josh and Skylar would cross that line, but then they’d hold back and I bit my fist, and maybe I even died a little inside.

The story is told mostly from Skylar’s POV, and while we do get a peek inside Josh’s head it was told in a different way, and honestly, the rawness of it was humbling. While this is a story, a work of fiction, the heroes out there, our veterans just like Josh are very real, and Ms. Demetrios did an amazing job at reminding us that we are so lucky to have these people serve our country. The sacrifices the marines, and all other military make are unparalleled, and these people are true heroes.

The ending was perfect. I would have loved an epilogue. (I really would have loved an epilogue). But after the ending (where I expected that epilogue) were all the acknowledgements. I read every single word and was so very moved by it. The author wrote this story from her heart, and it shows.

Would I rec this? YES. Adding this to your TBR would make it (and me!) very, very happy and I promise you won’t regret it.

I'll Meet You There Heather Demetrios Books Reviews

I loved this book, and I think it's going to stay with me for a long time to come. It was realistic as hell, which I'm coming to realize is what I prize above all other things in fiction, and it REALLY WENT THERE which is something else I admire greatly.

It's a book about being poor and struggling with hopelessness in a small town, and all the cycles that keep you poor and hopeless in a small town. I recognized so many people and events in this book as similar to things in my own life, and I really appreciated how Demetrios didn't just talk about the noble parts of being poor, the parts people are okay hearing about. She talked about the cat pee couches and the DUI car wrecks and the boys who join the military bc it's their best career option and then they end up facing the rest of their life with PTSD and missing limbs before they're old enough to legally drink the alcohol they're using to numb their pain.

I kept reading even when it was really hard and sad, because I REALLY wanted to know what Demetrios was going to do in the end. I've seen books sort of like this that try to show what being poor is like, but then everything changes and turns out great at the end. I wanted to see if she could pull off a hopeful ending that didn't feel like a cop out, ESPECIALLY in terms of Sky's relationship with her mom, who is in a downward spiral of alcoholism and crappy boyfriend choices.

That's one of the things I think no one wants to say aloud about what it takes to get out of poverty that it's the people you love most who will drag you back down into it, because you have to claw with all your might to get just yourself out of that situation and if you try to bring everyone else with you? You probably won't make it. It's just math. Economics. But it's an impossible equation because who would ever tell you to abandon your family? Your MOTHER? But when your other choices are really and truly to spend the rest of your life broke and (as the author so aptly puts it) "watching Judge Judy and chainsmoking all day" then what do you do?

This is one book where I was really hanging on every word leading up to the ending, wondering if the author had really found the answer to this unanswerable question.

I won't spoiler the ending, but I do believe she pulled off a realistic ending without copping out. I was a little iffy bc the situation evolved in such a way that it absolved the main character of some responsibility for the choice she made, and life is rarely so kind. But I did find all the characters' behavior believable and totally realistic, which I count as success in an ending.

An unforgettable book, beautifully written.
